I think its a social thing. I personally am not into it. I suppose its similar in a way to twitter. They get pleasure from talking to people about their opinions about certain things or keep people up to date with certain events and businesses.
Some use blogs as a way of expression. I've never had one before, but it does seem to be a good way to express feelings and/or ideas that need more words than the 140 max word count that twitter and facebook status's have.
